South Africa Deferred: The Pros and Cons of Solo Travel…

After researching the options for ground transportation in South Africa, I reached the sad conclusion that the costs for a solo traveler were more than I could justify given that I was spending less than $150 for the entire flights from the US to SA. I know, one would say that since I got the flight so cheap due to my flyer miles that I could spend the money elsewhere, but in my mind I couldn’t justify spending $220, plus tip for a one way drive from the airport to the lodge and then, the same amount to return from the lodge to Johannesburg. And that was just one leg of the 15-day trip!
So, I decided that I would put off the South Africa trip and reschedule for another time. And, since announcing the trip to family and friends, I had quite a few folks interested in joining me so it looks like I’ll have a small group to help share in some of the costs…and experiences!
This planning experience highlights the pros and cons of solo traveling. You will incur extra costs, but you are free to change your mind without explanation...just like that!
